Find your fertile window
You can only conceive during ~6 days each cycle: the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day. Sperm survive up to 5 days; the egg lives 12-24 hours. Track it with cervical mucus (clear, stretchy near ovulation), ovulation predictor kits (LH surge), and basal body temperature (rises after ovulation, confirming it).
Time intercourse
Having sex every 1-2 days through the fertile window maximizes the odds. You don't need to "save up" β regular frequency keeps sperm quality high. The two days before ovulation are the most fertile.
Prepare your body
Start a prenatal with folic acid 400-800 mcg/day at least 1-3 months before conception to lower neural-tube-defect risk. Aim for a balanced diet, healthy weight, regular movement, and limit alcohol. Both partners benefit from quitting smoking; heat and tight clothing can affect sperm.
Things that affect fertility
Age is the strongest factor β fertility declines gradually from the mid-30s. Irregular cycles (PCOS, thyroid issues), endometriosis, very high stress, and male-factor issues all play a role. A cycle app that learns your pattern helps you act on real data, not guesswork.
How long it usually takes
About 85% of healthy couples conceive within 12 months of regular, well-timed intercourse, and about 50% within 6 months. Not conceiving in the first few months is normal, not a sign something is wrong.
When to see a specialist
See a fertility specialist after 12 months of trying if you're under 35, or after 6 months if you're 35 or older (sooner at 40+). Go earlier if you have irregular/absent periods, known endometriosis or PCOS, prior pelvic surgery, or a partner with known fertility issues.
